ESPN Report on a Blind Pole Vaulter

I have several beliefs that some may find odd. The first is a quote from the movie Grand Canyon, “All of life’s riddles are answered in the movies.” We can learn so much from movies, and the arts in general.

The second is that sport reflects life. The story presented in this article epitomizes the latter. A blind high school senior achieved third place in her state’s pole vaulting tournament! If that is not an indication that if you push yourself you can overcome most any obstacle (including one that is 11 and a half feet in the air), I don’t know what is!

A few days ago, I was talking to the parent of a high achieving student about the amount of stress students experience. I often hear adults say things like, “She’s a kid, what does she have to be stressed about?” Those comments are so uninformed. This is a great article about suicide rates and tendencies in the U.S.
