Ledger 11.1.15 – deciding on future goals takes experience and time

Making decisions is a tough enough task. But trying to get teenagers to make decisions about their future is sometimes an exercise in futility. What does a teenager, who has only experienced the few career-based topics offered by their high school, know about what they want to be when they grow up? What should they study? What college should they attend? These are very difficult questions. As adults, we tend to trivialize them and pressure our teens to make a decision. However, we need to support our students and give them the information they need to make good, confident decisions. In this week’s column, we review some of the issues surrounding decisions teenagers need to make as they approach the end of their high school career.
